Anita May’s mother wrote and read poetry to her 10 children, leading her to imagine poetry a reasonable profession. Along the way, she has been a house cleaner, mushroom picker, factory seamstress, waitress, masonry apprentice, florist, delivery truck driver, secretary, long distance operator, baker, youth counselor, teacher’s aide, stage manager, and book buyer. Her father boxed in the Golden Gloves and put Everlast mitts on his kids and gave pointers on how to lean into a punch. He was an exceptional dancer and a painter, trading some of his works for furniture. Teaching her that life can be both a struggle and creative. Anita has self-published multiple chapbooks. She is included in the anthology Between the Fault Lines: 8 Bay Area Poets from Sugartown Publishing. She lives for words and music with her husband Karl in Northern California.
